About WERD Studio & Madam C.J. Walker Museum
Ricci de Forest is a hair stylist and beauty educator that is preserving an original Madame CJ Walker beauty shoppe. Madame Walker was an African American millionaire beauty pioneer in the early 1900s. Ricci turned the beauty shoppe into a museum. The Walker Museum has original beauty artifacts that date back to the early 1900s. Two years into his lease Ricci learned that WERD radio operated directly above the beauty shoppe.
A portion of the building is dedicated to Madam C.J. Walker, including hair tools from the 1940s and 1950s that were discovered in the old salon space. Another part is dedicated to WERD, and thousands of vinyl records decorate the walls. De Forest has also curated a collection of historic items for the space, such as Jim Crow-era signs and vintage cameras.
Ricci’s mission has been to preserve and promote the history and legacy of WERD radio.
